Recent mitochondrial DNA studies postulate that modern humans lived in Africa before in other continents. Remember that this genetic material is transmitted through women. Only if there is continuity female can go back in time to reach a hypothetical first wife (mother). In this first mother was called Eve, and their age ranges between 150,000 and 200,000 years.
No wonder wonder why the ancient civilizations were matriarchal which gave greater importance to women as compared with men. Also why is understood that the first explanations of the origin of humanity should their "beliefs" to the origin of Mother Nature.
There is a beautiful book (labeled a feminist) that talks about the role of women in the history of mankind. I recommend, is called "The Myth of the Goddess."
