The important role of Australopithecus in the history of the evolution of man is great. Australopithecus is the being who is separated from the great apes (gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans) and started the evolutionary race of man about 4 million years in Africa. Homo habilis, ergaster, Neanderthal, goliath, homo georgicus and even we would not exist if it were not for the first steps of Australopithecus. And why I say the first steps? I do not mean to say, I say this because the most characteristic of Australopithecus were his steps. He was the first in a bipedal walking. Not like the great apes, although ever put on its two hind legs, moving in general with four legs (or hands and feet).
Australopithecus based on age are classified into different subspecies. Australopithecus anamensis, afarensis, africanus, garhi, sediba. Very similar to each other and with small differences: The molars were getting flat, or slightly increases its cranial capacity.
Like chimps Australopithecus were fructÃvoros, eating fruit picked from the trees and eating certain animals (such as chimps do) as an extra intake of protein. But the gap between Australopithecus and chimps was that when walking in a biped began to take to the savannahs of Africa to collect their food.
The most famous discovery of Australopithecus afarensis Australopithecus was called Lucy.
So far it is assumed (we come from Australopithecus) although there are paleontologists who think they do not come from the Australopithecus but of Kenyanthropus platyops
(we'll see another day.) Another species that supposedly coexisted with Australopithecus. But the remains of this are so poor that some believe is a subspecies of Australopithecus.
This is quite enough, but to cut a longer post, another day I will tell you were like Australopithecus.
