Miracles "
THE GAME OF SCIENCE / CHARLES Frabetti
* writer and Matemático
Juan Pablo II has just been beatified, and the main argument for uploading to the altar (or closer to them, for the Beatification is the step before canonization, which will surely not far away) has been its alleged miraculous cure of a nun suffering from Parkinson's.
In principle, religion need not conflict with science, are trains that go by different rails, faith and reason, and need not collide. Unless one of the two trains derailed and invade the other way. And that is what makes religion to claim that an alleged miraculous cure is supported by irrefutable medical evidence. Those labeled as pseudo-homeopathy or astrology, should not we apply the same epithet to these miracles with medical certificate?
could argue that believing in miracles is a matter of faith, but in this case on the pamema the "devil's advocate" and evidence. The pope, for it offers direct access to the Holy Spirit, you can simply tell their faithful that Escriva Wojtila or are in the sky without a doubt and, therefore, may become objects of devotion and lawful recipients of ejaculations and prayers. No objection from the standpoint of science, simply stays out of such beliefs. But when he said publicly that there was an inexplicable phenomenon from the scientific point of view, have to prove it. Or at least, we must give science the ability to check if it really can not explain the alleged supernatural phenomenon .
As said Paul Kurtz, the pseudo-sciences are characterized by:
"Do not use rigorous experimental methods in their research.
-lack a conceptual framework testable.
-claim to have achieved positive results although the evidence is highly questionable and its generalizations have not been corroborated by impartial investigators.
In this sense, the supposed miracles are as pseudo-medical certificate as "proven" of homeopathy or "amazing achievements" of astrology. And who we are outraged at the presence of viewers on television or homeopathic products in pharmacies should not remain indifferent to the abuse of a religion that does not want to acknowledge that impunity can not invade the domains of reason.
